Ray Stevens was born Harold Ray Ragsdale on January 24, 1939 in Clarksdale, Georgia. He started piano lessons at age six and formed a band at fifteen called "The Barons" which played at local venues and social events. At 17, he moved to Atlanta and caught on with radioman Bill Lowry's music publishing company. Stevens recorded many novelty tunes, but he could belt out a song with emotion that had substance, as shown here tonight in "Indian Love Call." Ray has been inducted into the Georgia Hall Of fame, also. He recorded many hits for Mercury Records. He also recorded for RCA, and had many hit singles there also. In 1991 Ray opened up his own theatre in Branson, Mo. and performed there until 1993. He has also recorded new material, including the novelty song "Osama-Yo Mama."
