Popular British singer best remembered for her WWII recordings. Born in London's East End in 1917. Vera began her singing career at the age of seven. At age eleven she joined a child dance troup, performing  in local clubs.  At fifteen she became a vocalist with Howard Baker's orchestra. 1935 proved a banner year for Vera, she made her first radio broadcast with the Joe Loss orchestra, and was hired as a vocalist by Charlie Kunz. She also made her first recordings both with Kunz and anonymously for the Crown label. She then joined with Ambrose's orchestra  in 1937 and remained with them until 1941. In 1939 she married Ambrose clarinet and tenor sax player Harry Lewis, who also became her manager. Vera became the most popular singer during the war.. Her morale boosting ballads were popular with the servicemen. She also made three wartime films. After the war ended she retired, only to return in 1947 to show business, touring and hosting a new radio program. Her record label, Decca, promoted her in the U.S. during the musician's strike of 1948. She became the first British artist to hit number one on the U. S. Charts with "Auf Wiedersehn Sweetheart", in 1952. She continued performing throughout the seventies, cutting back on performances in the eighties. In 1976 she was made Dame Vera Lynn. Please enjoy these old WWII Graphics, and the great song and poem. God Bless All tonight.
"Hurry Home Darling"
From The Poetry Collection Of Susan Jane Kahon
Parting is sorrow when you have to go
For just a short while, because we both know
That you always speak your love from your heart
It helps us through, when we are apart

The words inside your heart, you can't hide
Only I know, where your feelings abide..
We promised each other the sun and the moon
And Darling, I know, that day will come soon

The ocean reflects the way home to you
And the stars reflect your strong eyes of blue
The words, now you speak, of passion to me
Echo, in time, of true love, endlessly

We can, my Darling, touch the far shores
If we dare to dream of sweet hope once more
Then my lonely heart, can truly explain
The sad song of parting's bitter refrain

We'll meet again, for you're etched in my soul
Both of us knowing, that our hearts are full
So hurry home, Darling, don't make me wait long
For deep inside you, is where I belong
